School Maintenance Renewal on May 3 Ballot

Early Voting: April 19–26

Livingston Parish Public Schools is notifying the public of an important School Maintenance Renewal on the upcoming May 3 ballot, with early voting available from April 19–26.

This 10-year renewal of a 7.0 mill property assessment provides funding for day-to-day maintenance needs and small improvement projects at every campus across the district. Importantly, this is not a new tax and will not increase the mills currently paid by taxpayers.

Why This Renewal Matters

  • The millage has been in place for nearly 70 years, first established in the 1950s by Livingston Parish voters.

  • It generates approximately $6 million per year, which pays for half of all school maintenance costs in the district.

  • Funds are used parish-wide for projects under $100,000, ensuring safe, operational, and well-maintained learning environments.

What the Funds Support

Each year, the millage helps address thousands of maintenance needs such as:

  • Roof and drainage repairs

  • Clogged toilets and plumbing issues

  • Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) repairs

  • Electrical and lighting maintenance

  • Window and door repairs

  • General upkeep of school grounds and facilities

In 2024 alone, Livingston Parish schools handled:

  • 1,536 air conditioning & heating repairs

  • 1,536 carpentry, glass & window repairs

  • 1,085 plumbing jobs

  • 1,064 electrical and electronics repairs

  • And hundreds more key, kitchen, and tech-related fixes

Managing a Large, Aging School System

Livingston Parish Public Schools manages:

  • 560+ buildings

  • 4.3 million square feet of building space

  • 778 acres across 50+ school sites

  • Serving over 26,800 students

Some of the parish’s oldest school buildings—like Maurepas School (built in 1911) and Walker Jr. High—require consistent maintenance to remain functional and safe for students and staff. Larger campuses, like Denham Springs High (48 buildings) and Walker High (44 buildings), demand substantial upkeep.

This renewal ensures our facilities remain safe, efficient, and ready to meet the needs of students and staff across all Livingston Parish campuses.
