Livingston Parish Schools Celebrate National School Breakfast Week
Breakfast Participation Increasing Among Students
LIVINGSTON, La. -- Livingston Parish’s school celebrated the 2025 National School Breakfast Week during the last week of February to celebrate and create greater awareness of the importance of a nutritious school breakfast in fueling students for success.
Springfield Elementary held a Scooby-Doo themed
breakfast celebration that included members of the local Springfield Fire Department (Livingston Parish Fire Protection District 2), who played games and interacted with students.
Research shows that students who participate in school breakfast tend to have better attendance rates and fewer behavioral problems.
Livingston Parish Schools offer students traditional breakfast service in their cafeterias and bagged “grab-n-go” breakfast meals that can be enjoyed in their classrooms or in the common areas prior to the start of class.
Livingston Parish has grown its breakfast participation by nearly 7 percent over the last school year, according to Sommer Purvis, supervisor of the Child Nutrition Programs. She attributed the increased participation to the greater accessibility and convenience of school breakfast for all students, as well as new menu offerings.
“Our menus reflect the tastes and preferences of our students, so recently we have emphasized increasing opportunities for students to sample potential breakfast items and provide feedback,” Purvis said.
Purvis said that feedback has already been incorporated into menu planning for next school year.
