Frequently Asked Questions

Transportation Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions regarding bus routes, schedules, special transportation needs, and safety procedures below. If you need further assistance, please contact your child’s school administration or call the Transportation Department at (225) 686-4203.

1. What bus does my child ride?

The data that determines your child's bus assignment can be obtained from the school your child attends. On rare occasions, the school may not be able to help you. In that case, please contact the Transportation Department at (225) 686-4203.

Note: This information is an estimate based on route configurations in existence when the data was compiled. In some cases, route information may vary.

2. Who should I call if the bus does not arrive on time?

After thirty (30) minutes past the scheduled arrival time, you should call your child's school (if open) or the Transportation Department at (225) 686-4203.

3. What information should I have ready when I call?

Please have your child's bus number, school name, child's full name, and bus stop location ready when calling.

4. What are the hours of operation at the Transportation Department?

A Transportation Department staff member is generally available by telephone from 6:00 AM until 4:00 PM on school days. Please note that the office is closed for lunch from 11:15 AM to 12:00 PM.

5. Will my child have the same driver every day?

In general, yes. Exceptions may be necessary due to special trips, illness, or retirement on the part of the regular driver. In addition, school programs and student mobility may affect driver assignments. Combined with limited routes and contractual constraints, route changes can occasionally shift driver assignments across multiple routes. Every effort is made to keep driver changes to a minimum.

6. Can the driver stop at my house to pick up or drop off my child?

Only certain students whose needs are designated through an IEP or Section 504 plan are eligible for "curb-to-curb" service. This service is typically restricted to situations where a less restrictive environment is not possible or where a disability/medical issue necessitates it.

For standard service, stop locations follow distance guidelines set by the Livingston Parish School Board:

  • Elementary Students: Maximum travel distance to stop is 2/10 mile.
  • Secondary Students: Maximum travel distance to stop is 3/10 mile.

Students needing transportation to an address other than home may apply through their school principal on a space-available basis. Priority is given to students residing on that route.

7. Can I require that my child only be released to me at the bus stop?

The parent/guardian is responsible for meeting the bus if they deem it necessary. Only designated students whose needs are specified through an IEP or Section 504 plan are eligible for official "must be met" status.

8. To whom should I report my address or telephone number change?

Your child's school must be notified immediately with any new official 911 address and/or telephone number. In addition, phone number updates should be provided directly to the bus driver. Once updated data is processed, it may take up to five (5) school days to implement a new route assignment.

9. Why is the bus late and why wasn't I called?

Lateness can occur due to traffic conditions, road closures, severe weather, mechanical issues, or delays on a prior route. Because LPPS operates over 280 buses transporting more than 26,000 students daily, direct phone calls for temporary delays are not possible. However, drivers are required to inform parents if a route alteration permanently affects the daily schedule.

10. How will I be notified of a change to my child's stop time or location?

The Transportation Department coordinates route revisions directly with school sites and bus drivers. Updated route information is distributed through the school. Additionally, the bus driver should notify you or your student when changes occur regarding morning pickup or afternoon drop-off times.

11. I got home late in the afternoon and cannot find my child. What should I do?

A bus is considered late when it is more than 30 minutes overdue. If delayed, contact the school to check for traffic issues, construction, or mechanical delays. If a bus experiences mechanical issues, a replacement bus is dispatched.

If your child was not on the bus:

  • Contact friends or family members where your child may have gone after school.
  • Call the school campus to check if your child missed the bus, stayed for detention, or participated in an after-school program.
  • Students designated as "must be met" are returned to the school if an authorized adult is not present at the stop.

If you are unable to locate your child through these steps, contact local law enforcement immediately. Transportation Department staff will assist authorities and school personnel in locating the student.

12. I have a question regarding a bus stop location or pickup/drop-off time. Whom should I call?

Please contact your child’s school first. Each campus has a designated administrator responsible for coordinating transportation services. If the school administrator is unable to resolve your inquiry, please contact the Transportation Department at (225) 686-4203.

13. If my child uses a wheelchair, what do I need to know?

Parents must complete a Special Needs Bus Application & Confidential Medical Information Bus Form at their child's school, including a recent photo. Implementation may take up to five (5) school days following application submission.

Wheelchair Safety Requirements:

  • Wheelchairs are transported in a forward-facing position whenever possible.
  • Chairs must feature functional brakes, operational footrests, securely attached seats and backrests, and working lap belts/harnesses.
  • Lap trays must be removed and secured separately during transport for safety.
  • Drivers or attendants will handle wheeling chairs on and off wheelchair lifts. Powered chairs should be set to manual mode during transport when feasible.
14. If my child uses a car seat, what do I need to know?

In accordance with National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) guidelines, pre-school age students are safest when transported in certified child restraint safety systems. To ensure compliance, safety certification, and recall verification, the school district provides approved safety seats whenever possible. Transportation personnel are responsible for properly securing child seats within the bus.
